Gems.

Jewelled Land   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper  7 x 5 inches   £ 65   $ 85

Shining like jewels the sky and land are vibrant at sundown.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

I chose an abstract viewpoint for this one.
Wishing to capture something of the sunset, details are not important.

All I wanted was an impression.

Defences.

Moat   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper  6 x 6 inches  £ 60   $ 85

The castle moat in summer...lush and green.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

This moat could easily have morphed into a flat green pool.
Using different greens I pushed the oils around with my brush and a knife.

I think the square format and small amount of sky
gives the piece a sense of mystery and intrigue.

Lyrical.

Evensong   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper  4 x 6 inches  £ 45  $ 60

All is quiet on the snowy hills.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

The rolling Lincolnshire Wolds often feature in my paintings.
This is an impression of evening and snowbound fields.

Wild place.

Habitat   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper  4 x 6 inches  £ 45  $ 60

Home to rabbits and birds, the hedgerow gives good cover.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Loose brushwork made this piece.
I use a one inch flat and find it is just right for my style.

Monday 27 March 2017

Rocky.

North Shore   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper 6 x 4 inches  £ 45  $ 60

Rock pools and reflections.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Making impressions of the shore is always enjoyable.
I like to finish my painting in one session unless it is a large abstract work.

These usually take longer...sometimes several weeks
as I ponder on the direction I wish to go with the piece.

A small painting like 'North Shore' is the result of fast, gestural marks and flourishes.

Garnered.

Harvest   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper  6 x 6 inches  £ 70   $ 85

Golden fields of late summer.  All is safely gathered in.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Another gestural study on this lovely paper.
Scraping back with a knife gives a textural feel as traces of
the oils are left in the dimpled surface.

I think there is atmosphere in this piece.
A reminder of late afternoon .

Saturday 25 March 2017

On stage

Finale   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper  5 x 7 inches  £ 70  4 85

Reflections on the lake.  A glorious end to the day.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Gestural brush strokes give the impression of setting sun on water.
The work has a warm underpainting which shows in the finished piece.

Friday 24 March 2017

Last thing.

Remains of the day   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper

  6 x 6 inches  £ 70   $ 85

Multicoloured and spectacular...the remains of sunset.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

A big change from the winter greys.
This was exciting to paint and captured my imagination.

Although it is a winter scene, the colours are warm and cheerful.

Thursday 23 March 2017

Verdant

Grassy Hill   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper  7 x 5 inches  £ 55   $ 70

An uphill walk in lush grass to the shade of the hedge.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Summer greens.
Not an easy choice as a painting can soon resemble a bowl of pea soup.

Varying the hues and tonal values helps to keep the work interesting.
The dimples in the paper also add a sense of texture.

Wednesday 22 March 2017

Drama.

Curtain Call   Oils on gessoed watercolour paper   6 x 6 inches   £ 55   $ 70

A final blaze of colour as evening approaches.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

This painting began as a landscape format but I wasn't happy.
I decided to crop each side to make a square.

The sun is the focus of the work and it is more dramatic now.

Tuesday 21 March 2017

Meadow walk.

Later on   Oils on gessoed 140lb watercolour paper  6 x 6 inches  £ 55   $ 70

Rolling hills and a summer walk, later in the day.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

A return to oils on paper.
The dimpled surface is a delight as the oils
brush over and leave interesting marks.

Gesso protects the paper and hardens the surface.
The painting is given a coat of re-touching varnish when dry.

Framing without glass is also possible.

Monday 20 March 2017

Moorland.

Essence   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 55  $ 70

Heather on the moors.
  A place of mystery

Lyrical.

Poetry   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 55  $ 70

Ebb tide and the light is gentle on the shore.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Spring is on the way and more flowers are appearing in our garden.
Gradually the colours are returning to our landscape.

Time to adjust my oil palette.

Saturday 18 March 2017

Layered.

Elements   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 55   $ 70

Ebb tide and the shore is exposed.
Elements of sand, water, light and atmosphere.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

The shoreline is full of interest for me.
Texture and muted colour are in this simple study.

The tide leaves creeks and pools, sandbanks and marsh grass.

Friday 17 March 2017

Warm light.

Wetlands   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 55   $ 70

A warm glow is over these wetlands.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

More orange underpainting and a more daring expression.
I think the setting sun is responsible for the mood in this study.

It was fun to swoosh the brush across the board leaving a lot of orange for impact.
Blues and greys with a hint of lemon yellow for zest.

Thursday 16 March 2017

Waiting.

Watching   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 55   $ 70

Evening comes along the shore...
watching and waiting as the light dims.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Another orange underpainting.
Leaving parts to show without overpainting the glow adds life.

A flourish of turquiose on the foreground is matched by a streak in the sky.

Wednesday 15 March 2017

Capturing.

Marshlight   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 55    $ 70

Marsh pools capture the light at ebb tide.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

An orange underpainting for this small study.
The warmth is allowed to show through and gives a feeling of depth.

Tuesday 14 March 2017

Just along.

Downstream   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 55   $ 70

Along the coast...and downstream.
Light sparkles on the water.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

More coastal studies.
More about tonal values.

Quickly painted to keep it loose.

Monday 13 March 2017

Early morning.

Creek   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 55   $ 70

Soft morning light and the little creek on the marshes.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

I shall continue my journey into coastal atmosphere.
Capturing light and mood is my prime concern.

Small studies.
No need to say too much.

Sunday 12 March 2017

Wild place.

Frost   Oils on canvas board  8 x 8 inches  £ 95   $ 120

A sharp sense of chill over this wild landscape.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

End of day painting.
The time to go with what is left on my palette.

These studies are an opportunity to test a spontaneous approach.
It was made over a previous work which had a mid grey overpainting.

Parts of the grey show through to add changes in tonal value.
I kept the values fairly close toned for a muted feeling.

The flourish across the board added the final frosting.

Saturday 11 March 2017

Later.

Cool   Oils on board   8 x 4.5 inches   £ 70   $ 90

A late afternoon at the coast.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Another late afternoon study.
The Lincolnshire coastline often has
'flat' light especially on a cool day.

Friday 10 March 2017

Brighter.

After Rain   Oils on board  5 x 8 inches  £ 75  $ 90

Wet sand, standing pools and light on the water's edge.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

There are times when a painting goes according to plan.
I really think it is down to staying loose and spontaneous in my work.

The piece really gave me a sense of freshness along the shore.

Thursday 9 March 2017

Vista.

Shore   Oils on board  6 x 6 inches   £ 65   $ 80

Sea fret, cool breeze.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Abstracted atmosphere.
This small study was made at the end of a painting day.

The work was slow at first, rubbed over, and started again.
It nearly didn't happen but suddenly I could see my way.

Using oils left on the palette it is a useful exercise in tonal values.

Wednesday 8 March 2017

Nightfall.

Lasting   Oils on canvas board   5 x 7 inches   £ 60   $ 80

The still of the night over the land.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

This piece came from the colours left on my palette at the end of the day.

It had been a rainy day...grey and chilly outside.
However, my mood was good.
I was warm inside my studio and there were three small studies drying.

Tuesday 7 March 2017

Horizon.

Upland 2   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches   £ 60   $ 80

Light on the horizon.
Memories of Derbyshire walking.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

For some time now I have been using my existing studio paintings
as ideas for new work in a series of abstracted work about land and shore.

Building up a series, or a body of paintings along a
similar theme is rather like having a sketchbook.

I don't often sketch outside. Preferring to draw from my internal
'mind' source of images... I 'sketch' with my brush directly on the canvas.

Looking around the room, some aspect of an existing painting might
catch my eye and act as the starting point.  Other times, I may use the
colours on my palette as the theme or the size and shape of the board/canvas.

These new pieces are left to dry and a photograph of the work is
used to upload the piece into my web galleries.

A coat of re-touch varnish is applied and the paintings become
another part of my 'ideas sketch book' as they are placed around my studio walls.
