In a mood.

Moody Marshland  Oils on canvas board  12 x 8 inches

Hauntingly moody, the East Marsh coast at low tide.

Studio Musings...

The wet shore has colour and texture.
Pools and creeks hold shallow water at low tide.
The wet marsh grass clings to the sandbanks.

This format is just right to show the shore whilst leading my eye up to the sky.

Band of gold.

Spring Gold   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 50

A warm spring morning with golden moments.

Studio Musings...

Plein air day.
I captured this scene before the day turned to rain.

Most of my work takes place in the studio so this was a change for me.
I really should make more outdoor painting trips.
Then I can justify some new lighter-weight equipment.

Monday 29 May 2017

Gleaming.

Field Corner  Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 50

The oilseed rape crop is turning to seed.
A few flowers remain accompanied by white weed flowers.

Studio Musings...

The flowering crop turns a large part of our fields to gold.
A bright lemon yellow gold.

Then the flowers give way to seed pods.
This corner of the field near my home has a jumble of flowers.
Splashes of white weed flowers to brighten the scene.

I painted this small study at the edge of the field.
 It was very hot.

Sunday 28 May 2017

Wold view.

Yellow hills   Oils on canvas board  7 x 5 inches  £ 50

Uphill view of yellow oilseed rape.

Studio Musings...

The second plein air study in the Lincolnshire fields.
Abstracted and simple brush marks give an impression of the day.

Saturday 27 May 2017

Hot lemon.

Sweep of lemon   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 50

Lincolnshire hills clothed in yellow flowers of oilseed rape.

Studio Musings...

Plein air day.
Not for the faint-hearted I must admit.

A muddy track uphill was quite a challenge with my painting gear.
Eventually I found a field gateway and settled to paint.

Clear blue skies are not my favourite but it was a hot day without clouds.
A sea of yellow and green was before me.

Keeping the work loose and abstracted I quite enjoyed the challenge.

Friday 26 May 2017

Poppy time.

Wolds in bloom  Oils on board  8 x 6 inches  £ 50

Warm days and glowing poppies.

Studio Musings...

A little painting from last year on my studio shelf.
Red will soon replace yellow in the Lincolnshire fields.

Thursday 25 May 2017

Ebb and flow.

Sheen   Oils on canvas board  8 x 8 inches  £ 80

Light all around the shore on a calm day.
A sheen on the pools of water at ebb tide..

Studio Musings...

My aim is to capture something of the light on land and sea.
Pulling the paint down with my brush gives the effect of shine on water.

Wednesday 24 May 2017

Below is a photo of the framed painting on an easel.

Monday 22 May 2017

Wet day.

Splash   Oils on board  8 x 10 inches   £ 115   $ 150

A wet day in May...splashing through puddles.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

I painted this very quickly over a violet underpainting.
Little parts are showing through which gives a cool feeling to the image.

Roughly rendered to give an impression rather than fine detail.

Sunday 21 May 2017

On track.

Violet Moor   Oils on canvas board  12 x 10 inches  £ 190  $ 250

Following the moorland track.
The last of the sun colours the horizon.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Spring has arrived.
I have moved back into my garden studio this week.
Painting out there I can separate easel work from housework.

No distractions...just me and the oils.

New work this week...

I am posting some photos of work on paper.
Using the oils thinly there is a gentle feeling of atmosphere.

Drizzle  Oils on gessoed watercolour paper.

Raining Again  Oils on gessoed watercolour paper

Brightening Up  Oils on gessoed watercolour paper

Something different...

Passage  Oils on gessoed paper  11 x 8 inches

Deep in the underworld there is a passage...

Passage  In a cream hand-painted wood frame

Saturday 20 May 2017

Golden morning.

Moor Light   Oils on gessoed 200lb paper  8 x 11 inches  £ 115  $ 150

Sunrise brings golden light to the Moors.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Watercolour paper is a beautiful surface for oils.
Twice gessoed, it has a robust surface for scrubbing the oils around.
The slightly dimpled surface makes a textured look when scraped back.

I am an energetic painter.
With a one inch wide brush I can make marks quickly.
Speed is an essential part of keeping my work loose and fresh.

Friday 19 May 2017

Night beckons.

Nocturne   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 57  $ 70

Towards the end of a relaxing day at the coast.
Light lingers in the sky.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

The third study about warmth.
Again, the orange underpainting shows through the finished piece.

Textural marks in the foreground give a suggestion of shore and water's edge.

Thursday 18 May 2017

Quiet mood.

Thoughtful  Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 57  $ 70

By the sea in pensive mood.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Another board with a warm underpainting.
Using oils on the palette from yesterday I decided
to keep the warmth as the main focus of the work.

A simple abstracted seascape.
Not a lot of detail, just a few brush strokes to depict the water's edge.

Wednesday 17 May 2017

All gold.

Gilded   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  £ 57  $ 70

Warm and golden, the landscape in autumn.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

This little study began with a warm orange underpainting.
It made a good base for an autumn theme.

Parts of the orange peep through giving me a sense of backlight.
Free brushstrokes depict trees and a track in the foreground.

Tuesday 16 May 2017

Second look.

Early   Oils on board  7 x 5 inches   £ 55  $ 70

Standing pools of water and light in the sky at ebb tide.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

A second study about the early morning atmosphere on the river.

More land 'texture' in the foreground came from marks made
with the warm underpainting which was scrubbed onto the board.

The horizon is kept simple to give a sense of distance.
Overall, there is a feeling of calm and quiet until the tide returns.

Monday 15 May 2017

First look.

Morning   Oils on board  7 x 5 inches   £ 55   $ 70

Early morning light on the Estuary.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Painted over a warm ground, this study is about calm and quiet.
There is evidence of land 'texture' in the foreground but I kept this from
encroaching on the horizon.  This is smoother to depict distance.

Sunday 14 May 2017

Evening.

Lighting up   Oils on gessoed 140lb paper  7 x 5 inches  £ 75   $ 90

The remaining sun lights up the land with a warm glow.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Another painting which began life as a larger piece.
Cropping to change the format and composition gives the work more interest.

Saturday 13 May 2017

Terrain

Layered   Oils on gessoed 140lb paper  5 x 5 inches  £ 45   $ 70

Layered land.
Creating a landscape the abstract way.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

This work was originally a wide landscape.
I decided to crop the piece in two squares.

This is one of them.

Friday 12 May 2017

Abstract.

Spirit   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches   £ 50  $ 70

An abstracted and gestural view of the sea.
A sense of the spirit of the place.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Moving oils around is my process.
This is what my work is about...the picture appears as I make marks.

At first I apply the oils to the surface in a scrubbing motion.
As I work, an image will appear and I work with that.

Sometimes I scrape it off.
Sometimes nothing is right and I begin again.

Some marks may be gently laid on and left.
Others may be energetically applied.

I find it difficult to describe what I have done.
Description isn't important to me.

Painting is.

Thursday 11 May 2017

Blustery.

Rough Day   Oils on canvas board  8 x 8 inches  £ 75  $ 100

A windy but mild day at the coast.
Gestural and expressive view.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Another painting making an online appearance.
Now available for a new home.

Abstracted and energetic study.

Wednesday 10 May 2017

A promise of a fine day out by the sea.

(Available from DailyPaintworks.com
or by email in UK)

Studio Musings...

Another chance to see this painting.
I have moved it into my online gallery for sale.
