Winter glow.

Winter Mist   Oils on canvas board   8 x 12 inches

Evening in winter and the stillness has an ethereal misty feeling.

Studio Musings...

This subject is a favourite for me.
I love to capture something of the winter landscape around our Lincolnshire Wolds.

There is an apricot pink light in the sky as the sun has set.
The snow covered fields are balanced by the top lights high in the sky.

I think the vertical format is right for this piece.

Summer glow.

Dune Track   Oils on board   7.75 x 11 inches

A warm evening for a coastal walk into the unknown.

Studio Musings...

Walking into the unknown.  A perfectly suitable painting was ruined because I couldn't leave it alone.  I just had to put something else into the scene.  Big mistake.

This led to a complete wipe-off.  Time to begin again.  Rather than attempt to re-do the same subject I dipped into my imagination and let that be my guide.

I like the warmth in the sky, and the little dip in the dune track where light touches the sand.
The sea is just visible on the horizon where there is a gap in the bushes.

Into the night.

Glorious Night   Oils on canvas board   12 x 8 inches

Rich colour and reflections on a wet shore.

Studio Musings...

This painting was created at top speed.
Time was running out and I needed to post online before midnight.

Sometimes speed can be the making of the piece as there is no time for messing around.
Large brush, large courage and job done.  Phew.  just in time.

It just dawned on me...

Eastern Promise   Oils on canvas board   8 x 8 inches

The clouds lift and reveal the light.  A promise of a fine day.

Studio Musings...

This was a very quick sketch/study of an East Coast sunrise.
I cannot claim to have been there but it is drawn from my mind as a remembered place.

My aim was to share with viewers how I 'see and remember' the world around me.

Here we are at Sam Scorer Gallery in Lincoln hosting our

Singing in the rain.

Puddled Track   Oils on canvas board   6 x 6 inches

Highlights of a rainy day.  Nature's mirrors.

Studio Musings...

Puddles and mud.  Of great interest to me as a painter.
I like the mirrored effect in both and the recent weather has plenty on offer.

Whippet does not share my views and will not put his feet in a puddle.

Precipitation.

Storm Brewing   Oils on canvas board   8 x 8 inches

Gathering clouds before a storm over the ebb tide.

Studio Musings...

This study is about weather and the coast.
Standing pools and wet sand pick up the colours of a storm-filled sky.

A glimmer of light rests on the water.

Picture this...

A chance to see 65 of my paintings all in one place at Sam Scorer Gallery, near the Castle in Lincoln.  Open daily until 10th April.

A preview...

Come and see us...a warm welome awaits you.

New dawn.

Ebb and Flow   Oils on canvas board   6 x 6 inches   SOLD

Dawn over the ebbing tide.  The edge of the sea with a frothy border.

Studio Musings...

This study was painted quickly and the oils laid on and left.
I wanted a spontaneous feeling to the piece without overworking.

Skyline.

Winter Sky   Oils on canvas board   4 x 4 inches   SOLD

The Lincolnshire Wolds in winter.  Land and sky

Studio Musings...

The third study in my trio.  I have really enjoyed this exercise and will do it again.
All three were imaginative pieces using my stored memories of seeing the spectacular sunsets in our county.  The skies are wide and open with amazing colours.

Last thing.

Day's End   Oils on canvas board  4 x 4 inches

Day two and more light in the sky.

Studio Musings...

A 'zig-zag' design in this study to lead my eye through the piece.
A simple composition with the use of colour and shapes.
Minimum detail to tell this story.

Time for home.

Four O'Clock in February   Oils on canvas board   4 x 4 inches

An impression of the end of a winter's day.

Studio Musings...

At the end of a recent painting session I set myself a challenge to paint
three small studies of the evening sky and landscape.  This is the first one.

Painted 'fast and fearless' I like the abstracted loose image.

All in the mind.

Rugged Shore   Oils on canvas board  6 x 6 inches

Evening and all is calm.  A study about atmosphere.

Studio Musings...

At the end of day I like to play with a small study using nothing but my imagination.

Using a limited palette of Phthalo Blue, Permanent Rose, Burnt Umber, Winsor Yellow and Titanium White I drew on my stored vision for the scene.  Pure fiction.

Another puddle and fallen leaves.

Autumn on the Back Track   Oils on canvas board   6 x 6 inches

A pile of leaves and a mirror puddle.
These are the attraction for this little study.

Studio Musings...

I have painted this track a number of times and recently found the photograph which prompted me to return.   The track leads into the farm garden which is private.

I shall make do with the entrance and I think there is plenty here to occupy my mind.

Sometimes the mystery of what is beyond is enough for a subject.
I shall leave the family to enjoy their privacy and thank them for the leaves and puddle.

In blue.

Uphill Climb   Oils on canvas board  6 x 6 inches

A study in blue with violet.
The diagonals show a track climbing up to a light filled horizon.

Studio Musings...

I love a hint of mystery in my paintings and this landscape is mainly imaginative.

I took a reference from a recent painting of a snow scene and also a painting called 'Dawn over Lavender' posted last week.   I did plan the composition a little choosing the diagonals which lead the eye up to the horizon and the colours...violet, blue, pink and lime green.

Keeping cool.

Long Hot Summer   Oils on gessoed 140lb watercolour paper
20 x 28 cms   ON HOLD

A haze hangs over the corn fields at the end of the day.
An abstracted textural piece to give an atmospheric feeling

Studio musings...

This painting is on hold as the image has been submitted for selection to be (hopefully) included in a summer exhibition.   I like the warmth in this work and the paper was lovely to scrape back the paint making marks to depict the fields and crops.

Wrap up warmly.

Frosty Wolds   Oils on gessoed 140lb watercolour paper
20 x 27 cms    ON HOLD

Winter up on the Lincolnshire Wolds and the fields are a tapestry of frost.
Hedgerows and tracks zig-zag up and down the fields.

Studio Musings...

This piece is on hold as a submitted work for a summer exhibition.
I abstracted the work to give a textural sense of the area without too much detail.

The colours are muted and cool.

The wind blows.

Spring on Bully Hill

Oils on gessoed 140lb watercolour paper.  7 x 11 inches

A field study in green.  Gentle colours and a simple composition.

Studio Musings...

The rolling fields of Lincolnshire come alive in late spring when the growing barley blows in the wind.  The tips of the grasses shine in the watery sunlight like velvety silks and satins.

This gessoed paper is strong and accepts my sculpting with brush and knife.
The marks give some depth and a rough look to the foreground.

Wet and wintery.

Slow Thaw   Oils on gessoed 140lb watercolour paper   9 x 13 inches

Abstract qualities of weather and wet fields are the focus of this piece.
A hedgerow after a week of rain.

Studio Musings...

There are days when an unfinished painting needs to rest
before the decision is made on its future.

If I add more detail it will become tighter and I like the loose, sketchy appearance.
Also the smudged, rubbed down bits give a soggy look to the field.

The temptation to fiddle is the road to ruin.  I will leave it alone.

All in a muddle.

North side of the Till   Oils on canvas board   6 x 6 inches   SOLD

Jumbled grasses, shrubs and autumn berries.  The banks of the River Till are full of colour.

Studio Musings...

I have painted this scene before and found the photograph this week.
I thought I would pay another 'painting' visit.
The banks are mown now and wintery but soon the grass
will be growing with the local wild flowers.

Fitties and fun.

Sun at the Fitties   Oils on canvas board   6 x 6 inches

Sunshine makes the day.  The sand is warm on whippet's feet but he won't go in the water.

Studio Musings...

My childhood memories of a seaside playground.  The days when we rode our bikes all day and explored the coast and dunes.  A biscuit, an apple and bottle of squash for lunch.

Saturday, 12 March 2016

Up the hills.

Dawn over Lavender   Oils on canvas board   8 x 12 inches

Lavender fields in the early morning light.

Studio Musings...

I like this vertical format for an uphill view.  It carries my eye up the fields to the light horizon.
All shades of blues, violet and pink in these lavender farms.

Mellow mood.

Sundown over the Bain Valley

Oils on gessoed 140 lb watercolour paper   7 x 11 inches

A mellow mood at the end of a warm day.
Getting towards the end of summer and nearly time for harvest.

Studio Musings...

Grasses and wild flowers mingle with the ripening corn near the edge of this field.
In the distance the hedgerows and grass fields create a tapestry of shapes.
Simple marks denote trees and shrubs.

I wanted to give an impression of mellow relaxation.

Run for cover.

Approaching Storm over Stallingborough Fields

Oils on gessoed 140lb watercolour paper  7 x 11 inches

Before the storm, a contrast of colours in sky and field.

Studio Musings...

Back to gessoed watercolour paper for this study...a lovely texture to sculp the oils into interesting shapes and swirls.   The paper is quite strong and will stand up to my scrubbing.

I like the colour harmony in this quite simple composition.
No need for lots of detail...a few brush strokes tell the story.
