Studio Musings...

Painted using a photograph reference some time ago,

 I have had this little painting in my studio.

Although I do sometimes take photographs of the landscape I rarely use them when I work.

 I find it is easy to become a slave to the image forgetting what attracted me to the scene.

Over the years I have taught myself to 'see' the landscape in colour, shape and form.

 I look for darks against lights and colour in shadows.

My aim is to depict an atmospheric sense of place rather than exact detail.
